New Garage Door - Prices, Types and Installation
A new garage door increases security, improves the appearance of your house and makes everyday life much more comfortable – especially with motor, radio or app control. The costs depend heavily on the door type (up-and-over door, sectional door, rolling door), the size and the installation effort. In this guide you will receive a clear price overview, typical additional costs and learn what you should definitely pay attention to when making your selection.
What does a garage door cost?
A new garage door in Switzerland costs between approx. CHF 1,500 – 5,000, depending on the door type, material, insulation and installation effort, and even more for high-quality or automated versions. The door size and whether a drive is integrated are particularly decisive. The following price guidelines will help you to realistically assess your project.
Prices by Door Type (incl. Installation)
Up-and-over door
Up-and-over doors are the simplest and cheapest solution. They consist of a single large door leaf that swings out to the front. Prices start from CHF 2,000 – 4,000, with motorization approx. CHF 3,000 – 4,500. They are considered robust, but require more space in front of the garage – ideal for older garages or budget projects.
Swing door
Swing doors are similar to up-and-over doors, but run more smoothly and look higher quality. They cost approx. CHF 2,500 – 4,000, with motorization CHF 4,000 – 5,000. Thanks to the stable mechanics, they are suitable for garages with frequent use, but also require some space in front.
Sectional door
Sectional doors consist of several panels, open vertically upwards and require no space in front of the garage. They are the most popular and comfortable option. Expect to pay CHF 3,500 – 5,000, or CHF 5,000 – 8,000 for large double garages. Particularly recommended for narrow driveways or a modern look.
Rolling door
Rolling doors function like a roller shutter and wind up in a cassette. They are space-saving and well insulated, but technically a little more complex. Cost: CHF 4,000 – 6,000, depending on width and motorization. Ideal if you want minimal space loss in the garage.
Swing door
Swing doors consist of two wings that open to the side. They are rare, but visually charming – especially in traditional or rural buildings. Costs approx. CHF 2,500 – 4,500, depending on the wood or metal design. They are less suitable for heated garages, as the insulation is weaker.
The most important cost factors – What really influences the price?
Door size
The wider and higher the door, the more stable the running rails, panels and drive must be – and the higher the material and installation costs. Prices rise noticeably, especially for double garages or special dimensions.
Material (steel, aluminum, wood, composite material)
Steel doors are robust and inexpensive, aluminum is lighter and corrosion-resistant, while wood is high-quality but requires more maintenance. The choice of material not only determines the price, but also the service life, appearance and maintenance effort.
Insulation / Thermal Insulation
Insulated doors cost more, but improve energy efficiency and living comfort – especially in heated garages or if a room is directly above it. The insulation thickness also influences the weight and thus the drive required.
Installation type (simple, complex, dismantling old door)
Easily accessible garages can be installed quickly, which reduces labor costs. If old doors have to be dismantled, structural adjustments made or openings reinforced, the effort increases significantly.
Automation & Smart Home
An electric door drive usually costs several hundred francs, depending on performance, comfort functions and control. Smart home connection, radio control or app operation additionally increase the total costs, but bring noticeable comfort and security advantages.
Security & Burglar Protection
High-quality locking systems, reinforced panels or automatic locks increase protection – and the price. Good burglar protection is particularly important for garages that offer direct access to the house (e.g. via a door).
Color & Special Surfaces
Standard colors are usually included, special colors, wood decors or scratch-resistant special coatings cost extra. These upgrades improve the look and increase weather resistance.

Typical additional costs for a new garage door
Not every garage door can be installed without additional work. Especially with older garages or when replacing an old door, there are often additional costs that you should definitely take into account. They sometimes have a significant impact on the total price, but ensure safety, longevity and smooth operation.
Dismantling the old door
If an existing door is replaced, it must be professionally dismantled and disassembled. Depending on the material (wood, steel, old mechanics), you will need CHF 200 – 400 for this. Particularly old spring mechanisms can be dangerous, which is why a professional is essential.
Disposal
Disposal depends on whether the door is made of metal, wood or a composite material. Usually there is a flat rate of CHF 100 – 150. It can be a little more for heavy steel up-and-over doors.
Electrical supply / fuses
You need a suitable power supply for automatic doors. If this is missing, a new cable must be laid or the fuse box adapted. Typical: CHF 200 – 400 – depending on the distance to the house connection and effort.
Weather-resistant coating
To avoid rust, UV damage or distortion, additional protective coatings are useful – especially for steel and wooden doors. Calculate CHF 300 – 500 depending on the variant (powder coating, painting, protective oil).
Repairs before installation
If the garage is older, jambs, walls or the floor sometimes have to be repaired so that the new door sits correctly. This ranges from small compensation work (CHF 200 – 400) to actual structural corrections (up to CHF 800 or more). Moisture damage increases the effort.
What types of garage doors are there?
Garage doors differ greatly in terms of space requirements, ease of use, security, price and appearance. The right door type depends primarily on how much space you have in front of and in the garage, how often you use the door and how much value you place on thermal insulation or burglar protection. The following door types will show you which model really makes sense in which case – so that you don’t just decide based on appearance, but on everyday suitability.
Up-and-over door
Up-and-over doors are the classics among garage doors. They consist of a large, rigid door leaf that swings out to the front and then slides under the garage ceiling. Advantage: very robust mechanics, comparatively inexpensive purchase and low maintenance costs. Disadvantage: There must be sufficient space in front of the garage – it becomes impractical with narrow driveways or directly on the sidewalk. Ideal for: detached garages with sufficient maneuvering space and users who are looking for a solid, inexpensive door.
Swing door
Swing doors function similarly to up-and-over doors, but move a little easier and quieter. They are considered durable and stable, but also rely on swing space to the front. Advantage: robust, reliable, relatively inexpensive. Disadvantage: not suitable if the car is parked close to the garage or the driveway is short. Ideal for: detached houses with sufficient access and owners who want a durable door with good value for money.
Sectional door
Sectional doors consist of several panels that move vertically upwards and run under the ceiling – without swinging outwards. Advantage: maximum space-saving, very good thermal insulation, high security, versatile design options. Disadvantage: a little more expensive to purchase and install. Ideal for: all modern garages, short driveways, detached houses with frequent door use and users who prioritize comfort & energy efficiency.
Rolling door
Rolling doors function similarly to a roller shutter: the slats wind up in a box above the opening. Advantage: extremely space-saving, full use of the ceiling and interior, very quiet operation. Disadvantage: somewhat less stable than sectional doors, limited thermal insulation depending on the model. Ideal for: small garages, low ceilings, subsequent modernizations and situations in which every centimeter of space counts.
Swing door (double door)
Swing doors open outwards like front doors. Advantage: the interior of the garage remains completely free – ideal for plenty of storage space or for garages that are used more as a workshop. They are also very robust and visually suitable for older buildings. Disadvantage: requires a lot of space in front of the garage, less comfortable in snow or wind. Ideal for: farmhouses, classic buildings, garages with workshop use or if the interior should remain as usable as possible.
Door drive & operation - How much does the upgrade cost?
Motor / Standard Drive
A classic door drive opens the garage door electrically and is almost standard today. For retrofitting, you should expect to pay CHF 800 – 1,200 including installation, depending on the door size and pulling power of the motor. A stronger motor is particularly worthwhile for heavy swing or sectional doors because it runs quieter and lasts longer.
Radio / Handheld Transmitter
Radio controls are usually part of the basic package of a modern door drive. Additional handheld transmitters cost CHF 50 – 120 per piece, depending on range and quality. Ideal if several people use the door – or as a reserve if a transmitter is lost.
App / Smart Home
An app module makes your door drive smart: you open the garage via smartphone, can check the status or set up schedules. Retrofitting costs CHF 150 – 300, complete smart home connections are CHF 300 – 600. Particularly useful if you already use a smart home system.
Security systems (light barrier, emergency release)
Light barriers automatically stop the door when an obstacle is detected – an important contribution to safety, especially with children or pets. Prices are around CHF 150 – 250. An emergency release that allows the door to be opened manually in the event of a power failure costs an additional CHF 100 – 200 and is a must for closed garages.
Repair or replace garage door? What is really worth it?
When a repair is sufficient
A repair is usually sufficient if only individual components are affected – such as defective springs, rollers, hinges or a broken motor. Such work often costs CHF 100 – 400 and significantly extends the life of the door. Even small visual damage or stiff mechanics can be repaired inexpensively. As long as the door leaf and frame are stable, a repair is usually the most economical solution.
When replacement makes more economic sense
A complete replacement is recommended if the door is very old (20+ years), repeatedly causes problems or has safety-relevant damage – e.g. warped door leaves, rust on load-bearing parts or defective running rails. Replacement is also worthwhile if there is no thermal insulation, strong heat loss or if you want to switch to a modern sectional door. The investment of CHF 3,000 – 6,000 pays off in the long term through better function, greater security and quieter opening.
Cost comparison repair vs. replacement
Small repairs are almost always cheaper, but often only provide a short-term solution for old doors. If several components are affected and the repairs add up (e.g. > CHF 600 – 800), a new door is usually more attractive in terms of price – especially if this adds comfort functions such as a motor, radio or better insulation. A modern sectional door can also increase the property value and reduce energy costs.
New garage door - small project, big impact
A new garage door not only improves comfort and security, but also increases the value of your house. Modern sectional and rolling doors in particular offer high energy efficiency, reliable burglar protection and durable mechanics. To avoid paying too much, it is worth comparing the door type, material and desired equipment – because the prices differ significantly depending on the effort and quality. If you are unsure whether repair or replacement makes more sense, a specialist company can help you with a quick on-site analysis.
